Henry Cavill – The Wrap

  • There is no writer or director attached to a Superman project and Cavill is not under contract for a new Superman movie
  • “[A}ccording to an insider, as it currently stands at the moment there’s no forward momentum on the project while newly installed DC Studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have been busy fine-tuning their long range plan for the DCU.”
  • “No one knows what the long range plan is, except for Gunn and Safran who have been at their new posts for less than three weeks. However, according to the insider, Gunn and Safran’s long range plan should be revealed in the next two months.”

News on DC Studios

  • (The Hollywood Reporter – James Gunn, Peter Safran Are Mapping Out “Eight- to 10-Year Plan” for DC) Safran – “This was such a unique opportunity to tell..One beautiful big story across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation.”
  • (The Hollywood Reporter – Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav Talks “Weak” Advertising Market, DC Plans and HBO Losses) – Gunn and Safran are close to finishing a “bible for DC”, a roadmap outlining characters and plot points; Zaslav is committed to growing DC,  “there’s not going to be four Batmans”
  • (Deadline – David Zaslav On DC Rising, Ad Market Tanking, HBO’s Losses & WBD’s New Streaming Playbook) Zaslav – “But if you looked at Marvel and DC ten years ago, you would have said DC is as good or better. But Marvel is a connected universe. It has a ‘bible.’ The key was having one person following everything. All of Marvel is one place. You don’t wake up and find that there has been a Batman TV show someplace….You will see a lot of growth around DC. We haven’t done a Superman movie in 13 years.”
  • (Indiewire – Zaslav – “The strategy that Igor put together was all Marvels in one place. You don’t wake up and find out that there’s a Batman TV show somewhere and a Batman cartoon somewhere else, they all have to relate to each other…There has to be a look and feel for all of it. And so, I went on a journey a few months ago of, ‘How do I put all of DC in one place?’ ‘Cause I think it’s one of the biggest opportunities at this company.”

The Hollywood Reporter –

  • Gunn and Safran are preparing to present a plan to David Zaslaz
  • Wonder Woman 3 not moving forward in current incarnation
  • Rumors and possible scenarios:
  • No more Man of Steel 2, Aquaman, or any other Snyderverse heroes
  • “Cavill shot his part of the cameo in September. But sources say there is a debate inside the studio as whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that studio would have no plans on delivering. A Warners insider cautions that no plans have been finalized and that Flash remains an unlocked picture.”
  • WB was developing a Man of Steel sequel and meeting with writers when Henry Cavill announced his return as Superman on Instagram (10/24); Gunn and Safran were named DC heads on 10/25
  • “Andy Muschietti, who directed Flash, even expressed interest in sitting behind the camera for something that would have brought a tone similar to the hopeful and heroic colors of the 1978 movie directed by Richard Donner,”
  • “In fact, the current leadership team at Warner Bros Pictures — Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy — did desire one more go-around of the Snyderverse heroes, possibly even having another Justice League movie with those actors.”
  • Gunn and Safran’s plan may change some or all of that
  • A sequel to Black Adam is unlikely (Profits have been debated, but not a huge hit)
  • Jason Momoa Lobo speculation
  • Possibly a hard reboot after 2023 films
  • “Observers are convinced the plan calls for an interconnected story universe and there is rumblings of the establishment of a creative brain trust.”
  • Matt Reeves’ stuff will not be impacted
  • Gunn did respond on Twitter (mentioning fractured fanbase, not being able to please everyone)

Deadline –

  • Talent seems uneasy, WB is “elated” with Black Adam?
  • Cavill “took it upon himself” to announce his return as Superman
  • Man of Steel 2 was never greenlighted and never had a director
  • One studio insider tells us: “At no point was there any pre-conceived notions of not continuing with these actors. It all boils down to how The Flash (June 16) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 25) do at the box office.”

The Hollywood Reporter newsletter –

  • “Sources tell us Steven Knight, the creator of TV series Peaky Blinders and See and writer of movies Spencer and Eastern Promises, penned a treatment for the project in the fall. Unfortunately, it didn’t thrill Warner executives, who gave notes.
  • Before things could go to the next level, which may or may not have included hiring another writer given Knight’s very busy schedule, Gunn and Safran were hired, and development promptly ended.
  • Previous administration was building toward a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie, which may have featured the return of Henry Cavill as Superman
